Scientific Illustrations - The IC-A Experiment (Mt. Terri)

The IC-A (Corrosion of carbon steel in bentonite) experiment, running at the Mt. Terri Test Site, Switzerland has the following aims :

  • To provide confirmation of the long-term anaerobic corrosion rate of carbon steel (C steel) in compacted bentonite under repository-relevant environmental conditions.
  • To conduct in situ corrosion tests in Mont Terri laboratory to build confidence in canister lifetime predictions.
  • To provide confirmation of the effect of the bentonite buffer on microbial activity and microbially influenced corrosion.

These illustrations were created in the development phase, exploring the canister design. The final canister produced is also shown.
