These tutorials focus on using the Mental Ray renderer (iRay tutorials in preparation). The production shaders enable the easy integration of 3d Models into photographs.
Scientific Illustrations - The Full Scale Emplacement Experiment (Mt. Terri)
The Full Scale Emplacement experiment being run in the Mt. Terri Test Site is a 1:1 emplacement experiment, testing both the engineering methods of emplacement and the monitoring of the emplacement of full scale heaters (representing waste disposal canisters) - following Nagra's reference case for radioactive waste disposal.
This secton shows some of the visualisations of the experiment, montoring equipment and boreholes, different emplacement machines and investigating the detailed sequence of events to emplace the heaters. An interactive 3D model was created to allow real-time investigation of the emplacement methods and experimental layout.
UNITY 3D was used to visualise the operational phases of the emplacement process. UNITY3D is a fully featured game engine allowing interactive display in real time 3D.

The Full Scale Emplacement Experiment (Mt. Terri) - Interactive 3D model
The 3D models were used to render a sequence of images illustrating the basic emplacement procedures. But the project went a step further - The created geology model was exported with the engineering models into the Unity 3D game engine. Unity 3D was setup to allow actual control of the equipment and testing in real-time of the emplacement sequences. The completed Unity 3D scene was published to a website and created as a standalone program which was also used in discussions with contractors (Excavation engineers, equipment manufacturers etc.) and also to other stakeholders and interested parties. This allowed the dynamic processes to be observed from first person perspective, from various overhead cameras or in free roam mode. Shown below are some stills from the Unity 3D game engine.
